Laboratory Investigations are essential for almost every patient who comes into contact with the Hospitals and an increasing number of patients receiving treatment in the community. More than three quarters of all medical diagnosis rely on laboratory investigations. 

MGM's NEW BOMBAY HOSPITAL Vashi  Pathology Department carries out over 2.4 Lakhs tests each year. Most tests carried out by laboratory Medical Technologists are done on blood, urine or other fluid or tissue samples. Within these are some routine tests that are performed in very large numbers and others which are rare and complex.

Our laboratory services are: 

• Cellular Pathology (includes Histology and Cytology)
• Clinical Biochemistry (includes Antenatal and Neonatal Screening)

Cellular Pathology And Cytology

The microscopic examination and pathological diagnosis of tissue and cell specimens taken from patients is one of the most powerful diagnostic tools of modern medicine. This is done in the laboratory,  with the help of  laboratory technologists, as well as with MD Pathology doctors in other clinical specialties.
 

Clinical Biochemistry

Clinical Biochemistry (also known as chemical pathology) uses biochemical tests for diagnosis and treatment. The department provides comprehensive laboratory analyses and consultation to the health services . The laboratories at MGM'S NEW BOMBAY HOSPITAL operate on a 24 hour, seven day a week basis Medical staff in the department provide clinical care in diabetes, endocrinology, metabolic medicine, oncology. Biochemistry also supports the neonatal and antenatal screening programmes.  

The department is one of the largest performing tests over 1.4 laks approx. tests a year.

Research and development

 The department has  been   in  carrying out Neonatal Screen  for metabolic disorder and has successfully achieved in making aware of the Metabolic  disorders  in  Neonates such as Neonatal 17OHP, G6pd, and TSH .  1500 Newborns have been successfully screened for the above tests and found some presumptive positives, which were confirmed with other Quantitative methods. This has helped the parents to take care of their children by giving them proper medical treatments .as well as taking precautions for other pregnancies. This includes prenatal care and investigations such as amniocentesis and genetic counseling etc.

These tests are carried out in BIO-RAD Elisa instrument. Out of 850 cases screened, 4 cases were found G6PD deficient and one case was Hypothyroid. Amongst them one case was followed up and his grandfather was also found to be G6PD deficient.

Haematology Laboratories

The Haematology Laboratory
Subspecialties include:

The Department unit  is open 24 hours a day seven days a week,
The Haematology department processes approximately 34,000 Full Blood Count tests .
The department is fully computerised and linked through the hospital network to all wards and GP surgeries. 

Research And Development

The haematological sciences collaborative research groups covers the work of academic and clinical departments .The work includes developing the understanding of  haemoglobinopathies in adults as well as paediatric..

The department has been seccessfully conducted  heamoglobinopathies testing By HPLC Method By BIO- RAD  Fully  automated instrument.

Haemoglobinopathies, particularly Thalassemia and Sickle cell disease are a major health problem, placing an immeasurable emotional, psychological, and economic burden on millions of people around the world.

It is in this context that the role of prevention is best understood.

MGM's New Bombay Hospital Vashi Pathology Laboratory is well equipped with HPLC Retention time method on the instrument BIO-RAD VARIANT which is used as a diagnostic tool for heamoglobinopathies. It has helped us in efficient  & accurate screening of the   haemoglobinopathies.

Understanding the importance of this screening we here in M.G.M.;s NEW BOMBAY HOSPITAL LABORATORY have successfully screened 1500 samples from March 2005 till date including all Anti-natal patients for Thalassemia.

Laboratory Immunology /HORMONE

This   department   consists of analyzing Endocrinology - Thyroid Testing, FT3, FT4, and Reproductive hormone - FSH, LH, PROLACTIN, and BETA HCG. Markers - PSA, Troponin-I and Infectious diseases HAV-IgM, HCV, HbsAg and HIV Antibodies, Anemia Profile Ferritin, Vitamin B12.

These are all done on VITROS Eci --- Enhance Chemmiluminescence fully automated immunoassay.
