WHO recognized the complexity of "Health" more than 50 years ago when it defined health as "a complete state of physical, mental and social well-being and not merely the absence of disease or infirmity" (WHO, 1948)

  • In the field of psychology, illness has been traditionally referred to cognitive and emotional phenomena e.g. anxiety, stress, depression or any psychotic disorder. Health Care Psychologists have begun to recognize the potentially far-reaching implications of their work for the achievement and maintenance of physical health and quality of life style.
  • The Health Care Professionals include the Psychologists who function as a part of the medical team along with Medical Doctors, Nurses, Physical Therapists, Nutritionists and so on.
  • Promoting high quality of life (than quantity) of a person rather than merely objective physical criteria with a biopsycho-social approach is the focus or mission today.
  • Psychologists also help in cost containment and equalization of care.
  • The area of research and intervention is more emerging in women's health, children's behavioral adjustments, healthy ageing and other genetic factors in health.
  • They can also contribute their expertise to the care of patients who have physical health symptoms exacerbated by psychological factors by providing psychotherapeutic measures to assess, diagnose, treat and educate the quality of life to the clients as well as to the medical professionals.
  • In today's medical arena, Clinical Psychologists function as an independent clinician and as Consultants to the entire Health Care Team.
  • We are indispensable in evaluating the psychological aspects of patient- care.
  • We work directly with patients or in consultation with the medical team to design treatments that are suited not only to the patients physical need but also to psychological needs as well.
